2020 JURASSIQUE BLANC Chardonnay western victoria

Lack of rain, poor flowering & general harsh conditions of the past few years have contributed to the lack of Chardonnay grown at Eastern Peake. This wine is off two vineyards - ours at Coghills Creek & the one at Tarrington. It was previously mentioned no 2020 would be produced, under very fortunate circumstances a wine has been produced.

Im so pleased that this could be produced again, its not fully oxidative such as other releases its the "Ouille" method. the thought of risking this wine in 2020 was a bit much, the wine does have undertones of the style though. whole bunch pressed, barrel fermented, full malo, no additions just minimal sulphur at racking & again at bottling.

2019/17 Jurassique Blanc O2 Chardonnay Coghills Creek (750ml 12.8% alc, diam 30) Only 44 Dozen Produced, Lack of rain, poor flowering & general harsh conditions over the past few years have contributed to the limited amounts of chardonnay grown at eastern peake. This is a wine of two vintages - a project from 2017 & a single barrel of 2019. No 2020 has been produced, hopefully 2021 delivers some nice conditions for growing chardonnay in this part of Australia. Vineyard: EASTERN PEAKE Altitude: 430 meters Planted: 1991 / 1993 Clone: i10v5 / P58 Orientation: elevated on a plateau, east - west row direction Soil: grey loam weathered basalt on free draining soils Winemaking: zero additions, whole bunch pressed, left un-topped for 6 months on each vintage then racked. unforced Malo. elevagé: 228L casks for 12 months 2016 jurassique blanc Mike Bennie 10 January 2018 Winemaker Owen Latta is one of the most exciting wine producers in Australia, and is unnervingly releasing hit after hit. The wines are alt-expressions for the most part, but so easy to enjoy, which makes the chicanery in mind all the more present. That being said, he grows great grapes, or sources outstanding vineyards, uses a slow wine approach to raising these wines and judiciously applies his winemaking know-how. Here’s another belter. The irony is, many winemakers of a technocratic set would balk at the proposition – chardonnay, naturally fermented, no temperature control, intentionally ullaged over a period of 12 months… the maths shouldn’t work, but it does. A nod in the direction of Jura. The fruit is grown by young Latta at his uncle’s farm, close by the Eastern Peake home estate in Ballarat. Outstanding wine for freshness, complexity, light savoury character, saline acidity, bold personality. It shows perfume of sea spray, faint grilled nuts, green apple, lemon blossom. The palate has some light concentration, a slick of fresh fruit character lightly seasoned with spice, nuttiness, more of the saline-mineral character. There’s no shyness of flavour here and yet it feels bright and vivacious. It stretches long, mouthwatering, beautiful. It shows shades of Jura but less pronounced, let’s call it more restrained. Fine wine in any language. Such delicious, unreal drinking. Toasty notes, sea spray character, green apple, faint bergamot and lemon verbena. Flavours run a similar course, mellow and soft, exceptional length and persistence. This is such a charming wine with so much character, decidedly in the Jura vein with it’s own, rich, opulent thing going on. Delicious, formidably interesting wine.
